Being open-minded is one of the best tools to have while traveling. Plans change, communication can be difficult, getting lost is common, and cultural differences can be uncomfortable. Visiting the Osaek Carbonated Hot Springs in Yangyang, South Korea really tested my go-with-the-flow attitude. Though, the experience at the time was a bit awkward, I was so glad I gave it a shot.

What are the Osaek Carbonated Hot Springs?
The Osaek Carbonated Hot Springs are baths in Yangyang, South Korea that share residency with the Osaek Greenyard Hotel. The hot springs are not co-ed, but share the same variety of hot springs in both the male and female rooms. There are co-ed dry saunas, but cost an additional fee to use.
There are around 10 different baths in the complex that can be enjoyed. Each bath has different benefits for the body, but the carbonated bath is what attracts many people to come bathe. In fact, it’s advertised as the only health spring complex in Korea!
Variety of Baths
Each hot spring is regulated at a certain pH level and temperature for the guest’s preference and various health needs. To name a few baths included in the Osaek Hot Spring experience are a green tea bath that sits around 35 degrees Celsius, an Alkali bath at around 39 degrees Celsius, a cold bath at about 24 degrees Celsius, and others ranging up to around 42 degrees Celsius. There are also saunas, steam rooms, and pebble foot baths that massage the feet as you walk around on them.
The Carbonated Hot Spring
The main attraction, though, is the carbonated hot spring. Like the name, it is indeed carbonated and leaves tiny bubbles all over your body. It’s not the most comfortable bath to relax in, as it is about 27 degrees Celsius and smells like Sulphur. But this hot spring has lots of health benefits. It’s high in iron and carbonic acid, which is great for increasing blood flow, good for digestion, helps with anemia, and many other things.
Steps on How to Use the Carbonated Hot Springs
- Head to the basement level of the Osaek Greenyard Hotel, where you can pay for your entry to the hot springs.
- Enter the men or women’s locker room. Undress completely and store your clothes and belongings in a locker.
- Enter into the hot springs room.
- Utilize the wash stations to bathe yourself prior to entering the hot springs. (Many bring their own soaps for bathing).
- Enter the various baths. Each bath is labeled with pH and temperature.
- Between each bath, use a bucket to rinse yourself off with the water from the next bath you intend to use, or go back to the wash stations to rinse off.
- To make the most of the experience, the Osaek facility recommends drinking health tea, meditating, utilizing the saunas, drinking lots of water, and resting in one (or more) of the seven themed rooms (ocher room, herbal medicine room, salt room, ocher salt room, jewelry room, ice room, or sleeping room) in addition to bathing in the hot springs.
